Here We Go!
Well, I did it. I started my own commercial interior design company.
For some perspective, here’s a little about me…
I grew up in Oklahoma City and Edmond, Oklahoma. I attended Oklahoma State University where I got my BS in Interior Design.
I took an internship my senior year in college with Devon Energy Corporation, which eventually led to a full-time job after graduation with their in-house design team. I spent nearly six years working on designing corporate office space and oilfield offices all over the states of Texas and Oklahoma and occasionally remote destinations like Wyoming and Montana.
Although Devon was a great starting point, I found myself wanting a change. I wanted to see more of the world through the lens of an interior designer, so I left Devon to travel and figure out my next adventure.
I went to live abroad in Santiago, Chile where I found a ton of inspiration through the culture, colors, textures and scenery of South America. This experience was exactly what I needed to give me the confidence to shove all my stuff into my Mini Cooper and start fresh in a new town, looking forward to new opportunity.
My dream was to pursue tech companies and fun/artsy firms that wanted more than corporate office designs. It seemed like Austin, Texas was the perfect place to settle and find a fit.
I interviewed with S. Tipton Studio 8 years ago and met a team of two, Sandy Tipton and Kate Blok, working out of Sandy’s house. The three of us worked great together and soon grew into a small studio just west of downtown. I watched the S. Tipton team grow and I watched a lot of great designers come into their own in that space. I was fortunate enough to work on some fantastic projects, many of which are featured here on my website with Sandy’s permission.
As with a lot of us, the pandemic gave me a new perspective on work and family. Since moving to Austin, I have met and married a wonderful man and I’m mom to an outrageously rambunctious two-year-old son and way-too-smart eight-year-old stepson. We now live in Dripping Springs, a few miles west of Austin. Sandy’s firm is growing fast and moving to north Austin, so I decided it was time for another big change.
Through my years with S. Tipton, I’ve built some great friendships and working relationships in the design industry. With the encouragement of those colleagues, along with that from my family and close friends, I knew it was time to forge my own path.
So here I am, writing my first blog post on my new website for my new company.
You can’t have the last name Corn and not use it, but it truly is the perfect metaphor for taking a seed of an idea and growing it into a beautiful interior that I hope inspires you and your team, increases productivity and is the foundation of a modern and comfortable workspace.
I’m excited, a little scared, but most of all I’m ready to get to work for you.
I’ll be making blog posts as often as possible and I hope you’ll come along on this journey with me as we build Austin, one interior at a time.
